Contrary to popular belief, the relationship between poverty and mental health can go both ways...
The relationship between poverty and mental health can be referred to as a vicious cycle. To begin with the most obvious way the relationship goes, poverty affects mental health because living in a state of impoverishment can cause depression and stress. The less acknowledged way the relationship works is that suffering from a mental illness can be truly debilitating and disable someone from obtaining their maximum potential in life. This may include one's ability to secure a well-paying job, complete their education, socialize amongst their peers, or create meaningful relationships. This is why the relationship between poverty and mental health is such a vicious cycle that needs to be looked at in further detail.
Some possible solutions to combat this issue and advocate for better treatment of individuals who are suffering through this combination is to raise awareness in order to raise employment and wages. With increased opportunities and pay for individuals suffering from poor mental health or coming from a state of impoverishment, the consequences of leading such a life can be reduced significantly.
